Elements and Principles of Art

THE ELEMENTS LINE A continuous or implied mark SPACE the distance or area between, around, above or within things COLOR A response of vision to light FORM Appears or is three dimensional SHAPE An enclosed space TEXTURE Surface quality of artwork perceived through touch or implied through vision VALUE Describes the lightness of a color THE PRINCIPLES BALANCE an equal distribution of weight; -Symmetrical balance the design is the same on both sides, -Asymmetrical is not the same on both sides but still looks balanced, -Radial are when elements are arranged around a central point creating balance. EMPHASIS developing points of interest to pull the viewer's eye to important parts of the work. Artist often use size, shape, texture, color, etc to accomplish this. RHYTHM shows movement through the artists' repetition of certain Elements Of Art MOVEMENT/RYTHM Implied movement- The viewer's eye is drawn from one object to the next Actual Movement- physically changes RHYTHM- a type of movement in ART created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement PATTERN/ REPETITION Repeating of an object or symbol throughout a piece of artwork. VARIETY The use of several elements of design in a piece of artwork UNITY when all the parts equal a whole and or give a sense of completeness PROPORTION one part in relation to another
