Kingdom of Tonga

This is a great blog about the Kingdom of Tonga to hold us over until Cassie gets settled and finds a computer! It was written in 2004 from an American's point of view. While researching be thinking about a project we could do with Cassie and/or the people she meets on her journey with the Peace Core.

IGoogle

IGoogle is a great way to expose yourself to the arts every day. It is free to join. You create your own "Google search page" and add art as an interest. I highly recommend doing this! Let me know if you do!

IB Student Builds Bike Out Of Wood

16 year-old Marco Facciola built this completely wooden bike for a school project, managing to avoid using any metal at all. Yes, this wooden wheeled wonder even has a chain and gearing made of wood, held together with wooden joints and glue. The detail in the free-wheeling ratchet and spacers between the chain links, pinned with tiny dowels, is amazing. Marco had to complete this as a non-academic project for his International Baccalaureate, and inspiration came from his grandfather, forced to make wooden wheels for his bike during the war due to rubber shortages. {Lee Valley Tools}

Sketchbooks

OMG was my first reaction to these sketchbooks and 24 hours later I am still saying OMG! These sketchbooks are done by people all over the world. If you click on a thumbnail you can view the whole book. They are truly inspiring! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE find time this weekend to take a look. Note how many artists embrace negative space and how others fill negative space. After viewing some books, reflect on the experience in your IWB.

Voicethread.com

This voice thread is students talking about a Velasquez painting. It is an awesome example of describing and analyzing art in great detail. When writing about art in your IWB be detailed and know that personal thoughts and ideas are key. Listen to these students to get an idea of what I am talking about. Also remember the "cheat sheet" in your student handbook. Pick a piece of art and practice writing about it in your IWB. Make sure to include your own interpretation!

@ Studio

I spent 14 hours at the studio this weekend and this is what I did.
Finish some new vases I started last weekend. I am very excited about these. I flirted with the lip of the vase by allowing elements to go beyond. Each of these pots were thrown on the wheel then cut in half and altered. I takes me about an hour to create each one. I have 16 completed.
These are my new cups. I used to make cups all the time but have not for the last few years. It felt good to make them again. I love making cups. I love the idea of some one holding it in their hands, the intimacy of them placing it on their lips and as a tool to nourish the body. I could go on and on about the beauty of a hand made cup! I thought about how to display my work for the upcoming Open House. Note: No white walls here! :)

I decided that I want to start painting again. It is an itch that over comes me at least once a year. I am going to be developing my ideas in my sketchbook (IWB to you). My goal is to get a painting studio set up in the basement of my home this week and start collecting materials.

What did you do for art's sake this weekend?

316 ART

This is the building my studio is in. Once a year we open our studios to the public. The inside scoop is... this year's Open House will be Friday, November 7th. SAVE THIS DATE! This is a great opportunity for you to see the amazing artists working downtown! There are actually many artists and bands whose studios are downtown, mostly in old factory buildings. I love working in my studio with the windows open and hearing the band who rehearses across the alley playing!

Yellow Peril

"From August 22-October 26, 2008, the Faulconer Gallery at Grinnell College will exhibit Return of the Yellow Peril: A Survey of the Work of Roger Shimomura, 1969–2007. Shimomura, a contemporary Japanese American artist, creates work in a variety of media that explore themes of identity, biculturalism and American history, particularly the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Many of his works use his grandmother’s diaries and his own memories from the internment period as source material, personalizing the historical narrative of internment.Gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday 10AM-8PM, Sunday – Wednesday Noon – 5PM."Tilly Woodward,Curator of Academic and Community Outreach, Faulconer Gallery
This would be a fun road trip! Get some of your IB buddies rallied and hit the road. Check out what events are going on and start making plans. Of course document everything in your IWB and don't forget to bring snacks for the ride!!!

HL "ONE" Drawing

HL Student Artist Mission- Create one drawing in IWB representing the Elements of Art. Creatively label each example. IWB Documentation- research, planning, development, refinement, creation and reflection Requirements- LINE- A continuous or implied mark · Must show @ least 6 different lines FORM- appears or is three dimensional COLOR- a response of vision to reflected light. · Must show and label 5 aspects/concepts of color SHAPE-an enclosed space VALUE- describes the lightness and darkness of a color · Value must be represented in your entire drawing · Use a variety of materials TEXTURE- surface quality of artwork perceived through touch or implied through vision · Must show @ least 3 examples SPACE- The distance or area between, around, above or within things · Must label positive and negative space How will YOU go above and beyond?

Get and Gather

Essential materials: get ASAP -Hardbound spiral 9”x12” drawing book- Get one labeled drawing or multimedia containing 70 to 90 lb paper -2B, 4B and 6B sketching pencils -White vinyl eraser -Glue Sticks- Get a few. You will use these to paste things in your IWB. -Black pens- All IWB text must be written in black pen. Get a few of your favorite.

Recommended: Colored Pencils Range from Crayola to high end artist quality. Pick which is best for you. Watercolors Get Prang or Crayola brands Oil Pastels I recommend Pentel, good color, low price point. Range from 12 to 36 count. Pick which is best for you. Acrylic Paints Big ranges in price and quality. I personally use inexpensive “craft” paint, often with a Mod- Podge overcoat. I recommend getting some student grade tube acrylics and some inexpensive “craft” paint and decide which you like the best. Paint brushes A variety of Taklon flat and round brushes. Brushes can be costly. You get what you pay for. Quality brushes will last you a lifetime if you take care of them. Pre-Stretched Canvas or Panels Lots to choose from. If you think this is something you would like to work on pick up a couple different types and sizes. Supports Always keep your eyes open for things to paint on and/or make art out of. Great and inexpensive supports can be found in dumpsters, thrift stores or maybe in the back of your own garage. Be creative and think outside the box! Pencil Bag Great way to keep many of the above organized and ready to use.

Tips Shop non-art stores- Walk through your local hardware store and find interesting materials to transform. My favorite is roofing paper. Yes--the stuff on top of your house! It comes in large rolls for large scale projects, it is durable and black which really makes color pop! And it is cheap!!! Be Green- Art making can be very expensive if you choose it to be so. Opt to reuse, recycle and recreate when possible. Start saving cardboard, scrap wood, old shoes, house paint, etc. Look around the house for the pencil bag you had in 3rd grade! Studio on the go- Look for a vintage hard sided suitcase at your grandma’s house, local flee market or thrift store to put all your supplies in. Bit by bit- You do not need to get everything at once (except for the essentials). Build up your materials and supplies over time. Ask for some for your birthday and the holidays.

Free Hugs

After no one was at the airport to greet him when returning home, one lonely guys desire for a hug goes global. Track the countries that have been hugged in your IWB?

Student Artist Mission: To research, process, develop, refine and create a relief ceramic tile inspired by You Tube. Process: document in your IWB 1. Brainstorm and view “almost famous” You Tube videos. 2. Discuss opinions, social aspects and social responsibilities of You Tube. 3. Collect images of your You Tube theme and add them to your sketchbook. 4. Develop drawn images inspired by your theme. 5. Create a detailed plan of your 6”x6” video inspired relief ceramic tile. Think about ADDITIVE and SUBTRACTIVE techniques. Reflection: write in your IWB · What do you want to communicate about You Tube to your viewers through this piece? How will you accomplish this? · What emotion would you like to provoke? How will you achieve this?
