I am thinking SIGNS! Sign Sign everywhere a sign, Blocking out the scenery breaking my mind, Do this, don’t do that, can’t you read the sign. (sing with me now)

Like that one IWB you showed us at the beginning of the year, or was that road signs?

I'm hoping to do holidays and cultural celebrations. To tie in the holiday pages I've already done and sprinkle it with culture to broaden the topic.

…at the beginning of the year? I do not know. I started off with road signs, say from different regions and cultures, how road signs have evolved, some to be more politically correct even! Then I got to thinking about how signs are used to communicate with all intellectual levels for example you do not even need to know how to read to order at McDonalds. Also how people have birth "signs" or "signs" from a higher power or signs that are no longer used but are packed with emotion such as "Irish need not apply" or "Whites only" etc. I could go on and on which is why I have picked SIGNS for my theme.

Mel, My suggestion is to keep your theme broad! Perhaps your theme could be CELEBRATE. By keeping your theme broad you give yourself room to learn, grow and evolve as an artist.

Melody said...

I like that, "Celebrations". That does leave a lot of room, and gets some ideas flowing...

I can definitely see that working for my IWB. Not just holidays, but things like Cinderella celebrating the idea of dreams, celebrating existence, celebrating concepts, etc. Thanks!

Sam, that timer thing is not right. I am in bed by 10 every night!!! I love sleep! :) I would never make it as an IB student. Yes, I got your statement. Nice work! I be that was hard for you. ;)

okay. thanks melody haha i cant believe i missed this when it was in CAPS LOCK wow, anyway im not really sure what i'd do with the patterns, it was just an idea. maybe incorporating geometric patterns in my work somehow? im not sure, culture is still an idea floating in my head too
any more help?

My tip: start by thinking 'What do I want and where I can I go with it?' For example, you might start with "I want to look at the patterns and similarities of the way cultures act" Then, you can broaden it to patterns to include geometric patterns, weather patterns, etc.

Another example that has nothing to do with patterns: "I want to do stuff about the history of pens" (I have no idea how I came up with that) But you could then expand that to 'writing utensils' and then just 'utensils' to incorporate all devices of practical use (baskets, instruments, cooking utensils from different countries, tools and machinery etc).

See how you can take an idea and expand on it? For fun ideas on how to expand, try randomly googling or thesaurusing words to see how different of results you can get. Good luck!

well, i'm doing patterns in nature tree rings, bubbles, leaf veins etc etc... maybe you could do patterns in culture...i'm not sure...that would tie to your original theme that you wanted to do...that could be like the greek key or even like patterns in traditions...i'm not sure mrs. green would know better...
good luck :)

Melody's idea is really good, but remember that it should be broad so utensils would be better than writing utensils etc. just remember that when you're trying to come up with yours. and make sure it's something you're really interested in cuz you're gonna have to live with the theme for quite a while...
good luck :)--Eliza (it's not letting me sign in with a user name, argh!, i wrote the one above too)

These are all great ideas and great advice!!! Patterns in nature will be fun, Eliza! Bianca, you could totally tie patterns to culture. You could start by looking at textiles from different cultures. Try not to think to hard. The idea is that you and your theme will evolve over time. Let go a bit and embrace the unknown!

I wonder how everyone else is doing.

As I was discussing my theme,
I thought of -SEASONS-, because it has a definate starting spot
( summer spring winter fall ), but there are a lot of ways that it could go. Seasonal weather, seasonal moods. I.E. Seattle has the most depressed people
( highest rain rate in the U.S. )
-violence was very prevelant in Burundi ( very hot there? -- may be a bit of a stretch, but seasons effect people more most people realize ) Feedback is warmly welcomed and appriated. THANKS!

MATT K**** ( for all those stalkers out there who want to know my last name * TOO BAD!! *)

Cool idea Matt! Neat facts. Seasons could also go with things like fashion seasons, sports seasons...fun! Nice job! (I'm sure all the stalkers are really disappointed now) :)

AND songs that have season in it! My ring tone is Seasons of Love from Rent. How have musicians used the seasons as inspiration?

What colors illustrate the different seasons?

It would also be cool to explore how season look different in other cultures. When I hear Christmas I think snow but Christmas is during the heat of summer in Australia. So how does Christmas look in Australia? What are their holiday images? Is St. Nick ready for the beach or a snow storm? What other cultures does this apply to? http://www.cultureandrecreation.gov.au/articles/christmas/

I wonder what the seasons look like for Cassie in Kingdom of Tonga. You could visit her blog and ask her questions about it!

You could also research how other artists have used SEASONS as inspiration!

M- Do you still have the sheet I gave you on themes? Are there any on there that excite you?

tehe. I went to Australia for Christmas one year. Very warm, but almost all of Sydney was closed. I found this website about Christmas in Australia, they say in 'Santa' can be found coming in on a surfboard. (http://www.santas.net/australianchristmas.htm)
Kind of a more obvious one, but 'seasons' can also tie to Vivaldi. I love Rent!
Mrs, Green, cool link! I might use it for some as how different people 'celebrate' holidays around the world.
